Hi there fellow Frizzbee flingers,

Thanks to Becky and Collin for hosting a fantastic end-of-season party.  I hope their house survived the Spartan race.  Thanks to Bill for his unrivaled awards ceremony and Eric for his incredible slide show of photos.  If you weren’t there, you truly missed out.  We also had a good laugh at watching “Dave’s Ultimate Drop” on its 10th anniversary.

Finally, some of my predictions have come true.  I said last year that we set some mostly unbeatable records.  So far, they’ve held even though we had big attendance again this year.  I’m calling 2017 (Season 35, #14 at Tewksbury), the year of second best.  Why second best?  Well, we had:

·         The second highest average number of players per game

·         The second most number of regular players, with 5+ games played

·         The second most number of players with streaks of 10 or more games played in a row

·         The second most number of games with 20 or more players (tie)

·         The second most number of games with 30 or more players

·         The second most number of games in a row without a rainout, multiple seasons

All of the above records were set last year!  But we did manage to break a few records this year, including an unofficial record we’ve never tracked before.  But with only 24 games played (3 rainouts), we didn’t come close to touching most of the 13 records set last year.  And for individual records, 2017 may be the year the of the slacker.

Overall records set this year:

1.       Most players in game:  38, on June 13.  Those long June days on the beach are popular!

a.       The previous high was 37, set on June 30, 2015.

2.       Most players in the season opener: 28, on April 11.

a.       The previous high was 24, set on April 19, 2016.

3.       Most players in the season ending: 24, on October 10.

a.       The previous high was 22, set on October 14, 2014.

4.        [Unofficial] Most players in a game at once: 26 (maybe 27), on September 5.

a.       Have we ever had more than 16 or 17?  Probably not.

Honorable mention:

1.       The second highest average number of players per game (25.0)

a.       The record is 28.3, set in 2016.

2.       The second most number of regular players, with 5+ games played (39).

a.       The record is 52, set in 2016.

3.       The second most number of players with streaks of 10 or more games played in a row (7)

a.       The record is 11, set in 2016.

4.       Tied for the second most number of games with 20 or more players (22)

a.       The record is 27, set in 2016.

5.       The second most number of games with 30 or more players (4)

a.       The record is 14, set in 2016.

6.       The second most number of games in a row without a rainout, multiple seasons (30)

a.       The record is 42, set in 2016 (started in 2014).

7.       The third most player appearances (600)

a.       The record is 822, set in 2016.

8.       The third most number of players with 20+ games played (8)

a.       The record is 16, set in 2016.

9.       The third latest beach game (September 5)

a.       The record is September 16, set way back in 1986.

10.   The third earliest season ending (October 10)

a.       The record is October 7, also set back in 1986.

Individual records set this year:

1.       Oldest regular player: Dave (of course!)

a.       He broke his own record set 5 years ago and broken every year since.  Dave just missed being a super-regular player (20+ games) this year, with 19.

2.       [Unofficial] Biggest slacker, with the biggest negative difference in games played: Jeff N.

a.       Jeff’s difference of -19 beats Brian’s record of 18 set in 2013, and tied this year by Matt.

b.       Lots of other slacker contenders this year: Kurt (-16), Chas (-15), Kailey (-14), Nate (-13), and Kit (-12).

Honorable mention:

1.       This year’s top attendance was shared by Pete and Becky, both with 23 out 24 games played.

a.       By rule, the current FART trophy is given up if it can’t be defended outright.  Becky is the new owner for the following year.

2.       Joanne tied for the third-highest number of games for a rookie: 18.

a.       The record is 20 by Dusty in 1998 (almost 20 years ago).  Matt had 19 and Becky had 18, both in 2016.

3.       Pete had the third-highest multi-season streak of 31 games in a row.

a.       The record is Bill’s “untouchable” 54, set in 1998 and covering 4 seasons.  Pete also has a streak of 36.

b.       Future streaks: Nathan has the longest active streak (20), while Becky has 14, Joanne 12, and Bill 10. So wait til’ next year to see how far they will go (hidden pun there!).

Super-consistent players:

We have full statistics for the last 22 years (plus 3 of the early years).  Sifting through this history, we see that there are a relatively small number of super-consistent players.  We already have definitions for “regular” players (5 or more games) and super-regular players (20 or more games) for a single season.  To be a super-consistent player:

1.       You must currently be a regular player.  Sorry, all you consistent players in the past.  This category is not for you.

2.       You must average at least 10 games a year for each year that you've played.  It's not named “super-consistent” for nothing!

3.       You must have played at least 100 games.  This is no lightweight category!

There are now 11 members of this group: Bill, Dale, Bob, Roger B, Dave, Eric, Jeff A, Richard, Pete, Elliot and Tinu (new this year).  On the doorstop are Kurt (just needs to a regular player next year), Kevin F. (needs 9 games), Kevin C. (needs 18 games), and Kit (needs 25 games). But watch out: you drop out of this group if you don’t continue to be a regular player or maintain the 10 games/year average.  One of us who I won’t mention (cough, Tinu, cough) is right on the edge of that 10 games/year threshold.

Below is look at games played by this group from 1985-87 and 1995-2017.  You can see that Dave and Eric are looking to pass by Roger B’s total games played.

Iron man players (new last year):

The iron-man category is for super-regular (20+ games in a season) play for 5 years in a row.  There are only 4 members of this illustrious group, but Kevin and Eric only need 2 more years in a row to join:

All-time Records:

As of this year, there are 36 different “official” records (plus some unofficial ones not ready for publication): 29 are overall team records and just 7 are individual attendance records.  Almost half of the team records were set in 2016.  Notice that 4 records are more than 30 years old!
