Dale's Field
2002 Summary
Frizzbee players,

This is a lengthy summary of the awards and stats of our 2002 Ultimate "Frizzbee" season. Bill will also post this on the web site for future reference.

Thanks to everyone for another enjoyable season. Special thanks to Tim and Nancy Walker for again hosting the season-ending game at the "Sinking Horse Field" as well as the season-ending party at their home.

As always, thanks also goes to Bill, Mr. Enthusiasm, for his weekly announcements, previous game highlights, weather forecasts, and last but certainly not least, weekly pinnie washing. That's a lot of work, and usually all he gets is a Bozo of the Week award when he forgets one of them. As if that isn't enough, Bill also bought a bunch of new pinnies, which allowed us to have two simultaneous games during "Old Timer's" day. Thanks, Bill!!!

Here are the 2002 Frizzbee awards, presented at the party by Bill. As per tradition, you must be present to win, but exceptions are sometimes made if the embarrassment factor is high enough, as in Award 5.

1. The "Invisibility" Award went to Roger, who received a ghost-shaped pencil for appearing open so often on the field without anyone noticing (besides Bill, apparently). Will someone throw the 'bee to Roger next year?

2. The "Longevity" Award went to Tom Merrick, who received a bottle of extra-super strength ibuprofen for outlasting players half his age.

3. The "Sticky Hands" Award went to Raphael, who received, well, a sticky hand for his claw-like catches on the field.

4. The "Liar" Award went to Erick, who received a deck of cards for future trips to Las Vegas. Erick convinced certain guards that we were all employees so we could play on the field.

5. The "No Show Loser" Award went to Rich Coco, who emerged from hiding to play with us once this year. As is his nature, Rich promised to play several other games, as well as attend the season-ending party, but also in character, proved to be a no-show each time. Bill graciously awarded Rich a bozo-like trophy in Rich's natural state, as a no-show loser.

6. The coveted "F.A.R.T" Award went to John Carty, who received the Frizzbee Attendance Record Trophy for most games this year. John also got plenty of good-natured ribbing as it was pointed out that he could have had a perfect 25-for-25 season attendance, had he only gone to the beach instead of the field one week in the summer. (John: did you think of checking at the beach when no one was at the field?)

2002 Records:

Once again, we had a record-breaking year in attendance. But individual records were hard to beat. We set 3 new team records, but just one individual record:

1. The "Old Timer's" Game proved immensely popular, as we set the all-time attendance record for a single game, at 34. That's plenty of players for two full games, if not 3 or 4. That shatters the previous record of 26, set in 2001, which broke the record of 25 in 1999, which broke...

2. We had the most players ever in a season: 69. That smashes to smithereens the previous record of 61, set in 2001, which broke the record of 58 the year before, which broke...

3. We had the most number of new players ever (new to us, anyway): 28. This obliterates the previous record of 22, set in 2000.

Trivia question: who was the player whose appearance set both team records #2 and #3 at once? Answer: Christenson (Jeff Albert's friend visiting from Germany).

4. The only individual record set was by Mr. Longevity himself, Tom Merrick. Tom broke his own record as the most senior player ever, at age 65 years and 8 months, or so). We hope Tom will continue to break that record many more times.

Honorable mention:

* Besides John's near miss with attendance perfection, Bill also was just one game away from a perfect season. Need I remind everyone that only one person in Merrimack Valley Frizzbee history has ever had a perfect attendance season (and he did it two years in a row)?

* John, Bill, Bob, Dale, and Ted all managed to put together streaks of at least 10 games in a row. Bill managed to do that twice. Erick, Roger, Scott M, Joe, Karl, and Raphael each had streaks of at least 5 games in a row.

* "I Love Lucent" honorable mention goes to John, Bill, Erick, Bob, Roger, Karl, and Raphael, for playing all 6 games at Lucent (as well as the finale at Sinking Horse Field).
